In recent weeks there’s been an ice storm, tons of snow and extreme cold. This week has seemed a breeze as warmer winter temperatures make life easier. Plus when the sun shines it’s really quite beautiful outside.
This evening while out for a walk I was happy to witness lovely huge snowflakes slowly drifting down from the dark sky above. My husband laughed as I opened my mouth, stuck out my tongue and tried to catch the big fluffy snowflakes. It’s fun to feel the cool tingle as the snowflakes instantly melt in your mouth!
What I most appreciated about the snowflakes was the flood of childhood memories that rose up in that very moment.
I remembered so many times I had done the exact same thing as a child, mouth wide open catching big fat snowflakes as I walked down the street.
Even better were heavy snowfall nights when my Dad and I would hitch up one of the horses and go for a sleigh ride together. Dad’s big hands in huge leather mitts would toss a heavy old wool blanket across our laps to keep us warm for the trip. We’d slip into the dark of a small town night, with rare street lights highlighting the sparkling falling snow. Our little red sleigh would glide through the fresh deep snow, easier for the horse to pull before snowplows had cleared and salted the roads. I remember hearing the sleigh bells ringing with the horse’s gate, while I enjoyed the wonderful view all around. It was magical!
I loved those sleigh rides with my Dad! As one of five children, they were precious times alone with my father, both of us having fun doing something we loved!
Family is certainly challenging at times but I am sure we each have at least one magical sweet memory to cherish.
